Hi,
Im new to despair but i have found some very disruptive problems..
Having played on the very popular (but very boring) Higher Ground modules, i downloaded and installed their "HGenhanced" GUI mod.
I was very suprised to see my icons displayed using this GUI mod.
However i found that after leveling my ranger to level 5 or so i had to pick a favored enemy BUT i couldnt see any of the text.
I could not see any text in the window where you pick a race to be a favored enemy.

In the end i had to track down ways to remove various CEP2 files in order to simply display the missing text.

The best way when dealing with them is to create a new folder on your desktop, MOVE all files from your HAK folder into it. Download cep 2.1 (which is what Despair currently requires) and then run the auto install exe file, OR download the other one and move those files into your HAK folder.

What I do, as a player, designer and DM is I have three folders on my desktop. cep2_1, cep2_2, and cep_all. when I play a module that requries cep 2.2 I just move those files into my HAK folder. When I play Despair, I make em 2.1.

Hope that helps.

OH - ONE MORE THING. Ensure your TLK file is the 2.1 one, and not a special one for Higher Ground (if they require one).

Yea i got the problem sorted.
I'm not sure how much longer im going to be playing on despair but i will give you some constructive criticism.

1) there appears to be no defineable beginning and no end. To anything.
I can pick up a quest telling me to go find someone. I get no clues as to where this person is, when i can ask about it, no direction.
I have lots of NPCs to interract with and most of them stop talking to me mid-conversation because i clicked on the wrong option.

2) The fire giant in the first town is so rediculously overpowered that having him as a companion means i just cast invis on myself and walk him around harvesting experience.

3) The soft subrace attribute changes discouraged my completely from trying out subraces. I gave it a go by making a cleric using the vampire cleric subrace, i found myself getting teleported back and forth from the main town to the vampire base for no reason, not sure if it was on purpose or not, but it is very disorientating.

4) i spent more time running my mouse over the edges of the map looking for a transition than i do killing things.

THose are things i dislike/have trouble with.

things i do like are:
- maintenance tool
- xp bank
- active DMs which is such a rarity these days on most modules.
- free haste and first level
- great freedom with the subrace types.

Overall, i really like how youve expanded and updated and taken suggestions. But i think more focus is needed. As it is, it just seems to lack any goals for the player other than, wander around and kill stuff till level 60.
And killing mobs can be very tedious. Its either i make a melee character and go read a book while my barb spins around attacking one thing at a time, or i use my sorc unleash a billion spells that dont hit them hard enough. I literally exhausted all my spells on a single vampire once.

Despair is still unfinished and is a work in progress. I thank you for all your comments, it helps me balance things out. Despair is about staying true to the definition of the word. Most NPCs have been through tough times and don't feel like talking all that much. They might even seem rude and unforgiving.

I am working on a read me stone that goes into your inventory that explains much more than what you might understand about our realm. Have you read all the posts here, as well? I have posted spoilers and info that explains where Despair is and where it is going. We have never been as close to completion as we are now.

Yes, I'm almost always there, and always listen to suggestions. I like having holiday bonuses, contests, and participating on all levels of the game.

Thanks again for helping me get Despair to where we all want it to be.

Hey, also if you can, please give me some of the quests that you think might need some direction for someone to complete them. When Despair first started, these were very cryptic and hidden. Npcs and henchmen did not know who to trust, and always watched their back when they spoke to strangers. That is why not much information was given out, and even why they might have seemed unfriendly and cryptic. Today's Despair is a bit more under control, a bit more relaxed and they are starting to 'warm up' to strangers a bit quicker than before.

I am adding these two additional paragraphs to help new players fully understand what is going on with Despair. They will be on the Welcome to Despair - read me stone that is on your toon (although the updates will not be on your stone at this moment).

As you travel around Despair know that the land has suffered great injustices from enemy armies and Undead creatures. Some of the roads and paths that were once common, used by all to travel from city to city have been trampled down, destroyed and removed to further spread chaos throughout the lands of Despair. Searching for these paths and roads might be a bit frustrating and difficult, but places that are hidden, not travelled to much or even known about anymore might contain riches and treasure that if everyone else knew about, would be long gone.

As you speak to npcs and henchmen throughout the lands of Despair, remember they have been recovering from war for quite some time now. They did not know who to trust, and always watched their back when they spoke to strangers. That is why not much information was given out to aid strangers in their travels and quests, and even why they might have seemed unfriendly and cryptic. Today's Despair is a bit more under control, a bit more relaxed and they are starting to 'warm up' to strangers a bit quicker than before.

Also, there are Demigod and God statuses, which require X and Y (two seperate levels of xp) as well as a particular amount of Acts of Heroism. More on that later. FYI
